History of the MLTA Scholarship Award

Since 2013, one of the benefits available to MLTA members is the Scholarship Award.  This award is open to all active MLTA members, their family members and staff members.  Applicants must be enrolled in an academic institution.  Each year the scholarship committee awards no less than one $1,000 scholarship to a full-time student and a $500 scholarship for a part-time student enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours and working a minimum of 30 hours per week.  More scholarships may be awarded at the discretion of the scholarship committee and the availability of funds.

Applicants must complete an application and a short essay.  Finalist will be interviewed by the scholarship committee via teleconference.  In 2018, the committee received fifteen applications. Each committee member reviewed the applications and selected those whom they felt should be considered for a scholarship.   Six applicants were selected by the committee as finalist and were interviewed via teleconference.  At the completion of the interviews the committee selected and awarded a total of $2,500 to four students.

Similarly, in 2017, there were 8 applicants.  Five students were interviewed and a total of $3,500 was awarded.  In 2016, there were 7 applicants.  Five students were interviewed and 4 students were awarded a total of $2500.

Since the scholarship award was established, the MLTA Board has generously set aside $2,500 in its budget for scholarships.  In addition, it is contributing $100 to the scholarship fund as a memorial for a deceased member.

The 2019 Scholarship Committee is made up of the following MLTA members:  David Litten, chairperson; Stacy Burton; Nancy LoRusso; Cheryl Williams; Tom Walsh; Crystanna Cox and Susan Wehrle.
